Preparing Students for Life Beyond Graduation

Vocational Program

At Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, our Vocational Program equips students in grades 9–12 with the skills, confidence, and real-world experience needed for success after high school.

Through structured career pathways, hands-on learning, and individualized support, students develop transferable soft skills, career-specific abilities, and a clear plan for post-secondary life.

Our Vocational Program prioritizes hands-on training and real-world skills, enabling graduates to enter the workforce quickly with practical experience.

Empowering Future Leaders

Career Pathways & Credential Programs

High school students participate in one of two programs:

  • Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Program

  • Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential (SACC) Program

Both programs focus on building independence, work readiness, and career awareness while aligning with New York State standards.

Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Program

Students in the CDOS program:

  • Complete a minimum of 216 hours of work-based learning

  • Develop a personalized career plan

  • Apply decision-making and problem-solving skills

  • Analyze their strengths, interests, and abilities

  • Integrate academic knowledge into real-world settings

  • Learn to manage time, responsibilities, and workplace expectations

Students who attend a BOCES program may apply those hours toward their CDOS credential.

Upon successful completion of program requirements, students receive the Career Development and Occupational Studies Commencement Credential at graduation.

Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential (SACC)

Students who receive instruction and assessment on alternate performance levels of the state learning standards may earn the Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential.

To qualify, students must:

  • Attend school for at least 12 years (excluding kindergarten)

  • Meet individualized standards aligned with CDOS benchmarks

These standards focus on:

  • Career development

  • Integrated learning

  • Universal foundation skills

  • Independence and functional achievement

This credential recognizes each student’s growth, accomplishments, and readiness for post-secondary life.

Real-World Experience

Students gain meaningful, hands-on experience through:

  • Internships

  • Volunteer opportunities

  • Job shadowing

  • School-based enterprise

  • Senior projects

  • Career exploration trips and guest speakers

Internships begin within the Deaf Education Center, where students receive intensive support from a job coach and supervisor. As students build independence and confidence, support gradually decreases and internship opportunities may expand on campus and into the community.

Volunteer experiences take place at both school and community events, helping students strengthen responsibility, teamwork, and communication skills.

Innovative Career Exploration

A recent addition to our CDOS program is the Transfer Virtual Reality Training & Career Exploration Program.

Using immersive VR technology, students explore a wide range of career paths in realistic, interactive environments. This hands-on approach allows students to safely experience different industries, discover interests, and build career awareness before entering the workforce.

Building Independence for the Future

The goal of the Vocational Program is not simply graduation — it is preparation.

Through real-world experience, guided exploration, and personalized support, students leave Mill Neck with:

  • Work readiness skills

  • Increased independence

  • Self-awareness and confidence

  • A plan for their next step

Because at Mill Neck, we prepare students not just for their first job — but for their future.
