Creativity. Expression. Identity.
Arts Program
At Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, the Arts Program is more than a class — it is a space where students discover their voice, build confidence, and express their identity through visual storytelling.
Rooted in both Art Education and Art Therapy principles, our program blends artistic skill development with life skills, emotional growth, and self-expression in a safe, supportive environment. For students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing, art is not just visual — it is empowering.
Art programs for deaf students, particularly those incorporating De’VIA (Deaf View/Image Art) and ASL, provide profound benefits by fostering emotional expression, enhancing cognitive development, and strengthening cultural identity.
Empowerment Through Art
What Is the Arts Program?
Our approach combines:
-
Art history and cultural exploration
-
Ceramics and metalsmithing
-
2D and 3D studio work
-
Presentation, demonstration, and supported open studio time
Students are exposed daily to a wide variety of materials, techniques, and artistic movements. Just as importantly, they are encouraged to take creative risks, make mistakes, and try again — building resilience and self-esteem along the way.
Art becomes a vehicle for:
-
Self-expression
-
Communication
-
Cultural pride
-
Emotional regulation
-
Confidence building
Visual Arts Program
Beginning in Pre-K and continuing through graduation, the Arts Program is aligned with the New York State Common Core Curriculum for the Arts while emphasizing each student’s individual style and voice.
We believe students should have:
-
Access to diverse materials
-
Freedom to explore
-
A safe space to experiment
-
Support to grow from mistakes
Students work with both dry and wet media and engage in a balance of structured instruction and open creative exploration.

We are proud to have partnered with De’VIA artists including:

These collaborations provide students with mentorship, representation, and the opportunity to see themselves reflected in professional artistic spaces.

Mill Neck proudly features rotating student artwork throughout the school year in:
-
Four permanent 3D display cases

Student artwork has also been showcased beyond campus at:

Creative problem-solving skills

Confidence and perseverance

Cultural awareness
-
Fine motor and technical skills
-
Emotional expression and coping strategies
The Arts Program nurtures not only artistic ability, but self-belief.
Repurposing Materials & Meaning
The Arts Program is passionate about repurposing materials — transforming everyday objects into meaningful works of art. This practice becomes both a creative exercise and a powerful metaphor for growth, transformation, and possibility.
